Settle for Less NO

Previously, I wrote a post titled "settle for less yes," so why am I now writing about "settle for less no?" Being able to say "no" is an important part of setting boundaries and not over-committing. However, "no" is a stop word. When you say "no" during brainstorming, you hinder the discussion from growing.

Brainstorming is for creating new products, and it is for solving problems. To maintain a collaborative environment and help people feel valued for their contributions, say "yes, and." It is a phrase from improv that allows the participants to build a better story because it keeps the dialogue flowing.

"Yes, and" does not mean doing everything that is said. It means listening to everything that is said and being willing to explore how it contributes to building something based on a collaborative approach. Honoring diversity of suggestions leads to more robust outcomes, and it builds morale.

When you want to build a bridge that embraces diversity, bolsters collaboration, and builds morale, "settle for less no."
