We have all been there, scrolling through social media and seeing everyone else living their best life. We want what they have - to live their lives. Social media fuels envy.
The truth is, the best social media posts are manicured to make us desire. They are sales pitches - selling an image and, most of the time, what you must buy to look the same.
The world would be a better, happier place if we all had Ozempic, Botox, and fancy pants. In the not-too-distant past, if we all smoked, we'd be sophisticated and relaxed. New products and a new form of marketing, but the goal of making the consumer envious remains.
In the past, advertising was easier to spot - magazine ads & billboards. Today, anyone can be an influencer, and even more people are trying to convince the world that they are living their best lives.
Social media is not bad, but if it makes us envious, it's bad for us.
Settle for less envy by paying attention to how social media makes you feel. If your engagement leaves you envious, settle for less doomscrolling.
