I'm not into fashion, but I have heard of Birkin bags. They are hard to obtain, very costly, and a status symbol for the rich and stylish.
Recently I found out how much suffering is involved with the "Birkin" and "Kelly" bags which are made of crocodile skin. The PETA investigation is terrifying. It's truly something you can't forget.
The investigation received press in 2015, but it appears the news has not stopped the items popularity. Jane Birkin, the bags namesake, originally stood against the brand, but then accepted that Hermes had
identified an “isolated irregularity” in the slaughter process at a crocodile farm in Texas and had warned the farm it would cease any relations should it continue to neglect its recommended procedures - the Guardian
The footage by Kindness Project indicates that conditions are far from "regular". Why should any animal be bred to suffer for fashion?
If fur coats could loose their fashion appeal then so can bags, belts, and watch bands made of crocodile and alligator skins. In a world with so many sustainable and cruelty free materials, why are we wasting our resources to inflict pain for fashion?
Settle for less Birkin bags so you can show the world you care about animals. How can you do this if you don't own a Birkin bag? People can take action by joining the Kindness Project #DROPCROC and by asking their favorite celebrities who flaunt their Birkin bags what's fashionable about a bag made of suffering and pain.
